Heading toward the park, you’ll hear how the Everglades formed and get acquainted with the ancient Calusa tribe who once called the wetland their home. As soon as you enter the park you’ll get to visit the Gumbo Limbo and Anhinga Trails. With plentiful shade and plentiful wildlife, these are must-see trails. Next, you’ll see the Pinelands Trail, which cuts a winding path through beautiful hardwood forests. On your way to Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower, which offers panoramic views of the Everglades, you’ll learn about 20th century plans to drain and destroy this wetland, and how activists foiled those designs. Get a crash course in Everglades cryptids like the Alligator King and Bigfoot’s cousin, Skunk Ape, as you make your way to the Mahogany Hammock Trail.
