From Ljubljana: Skočjan Caves Half-Day Trip

2. From Ljubljana: Skočjan Caves Half-Day Trip

The Škocjan Caves are a unique natural phenomenon, created by the Reka River. The Reka River springs below the Snežnik plateau and flows for 55 kilometers (34 miles) on the surface. After reaching the karst — that is, the limestone surface — the river not only deepens its riverbed through erosion but also corrosion; it dissolves the limestone and creates the caves. Explore the Škocjan Caves with a local, English-speaking guide on this half-day trip from Ljubljana. Get picked up at your hotel or guesthouse at 8:30 AM, then drive to the caves as your guide informs you about Slovenia. Upon arrival at around 9:30 AM, your guide will help you to buy the tickets to enter the cave. At 10 AM, begin your tour of the caves, spending around 1 hour and 45 minutes inside. Marvel at how big the caves are and learn all about the things you see. Make sure to dress warmly as the constant temperature in the caves is between 8–10ºC (46–50ºF). After your tour, you can eat something at the restaurant near the ticket counter if you wish. Finally, get back in your vehicle at 12 PM and return to Ljubljana. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, astonishing diversity of karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for the popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors. From here the tour extends to the Predjama Castle which reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep below the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbor for themselves right at the entrance of the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best known and most notorious owner, Erazem of Predjama. The legend of the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his which helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year.
