Speyer Cathedral: Cathedral in the dark

Speyer Cathedral: Cathedral in the dark

The cathedral is one of the most famous buildings in our region. But what does it look like when the lights go out? In December, visitors have the opportunity to experience the cathedral in a new way. The "Cathedral in the dark" guided tours take place in small groups outside of opening times. The darkness leads to a completely different perception of the space: the echo of footsteps, a hint of incense, shadows on the walls. Led by experienced cathedral guides, participants gain fascinating insights into the spiritual and cultural significance of this impressive building. This gives visitors the opportunity to see the cathedral from a completely new perspective. In the dark, details and moods come to light that are often overlooked in daylight. The guided tour begins at the cathedral information desk on the south side of the cathedral. During the walking tour, the interior (nave, aisles and transept) is visited. The crypt and imperial tombs are at the end of the guided tour.

On the left bank of the Rhine lies the former imperial city of Speyer, a picturesque place that lures many tourists – especially history buffs. Founded by the Romans, it is one of Germany’s oldest cities. From afar it is already recognizable by the impressive silhouette of its four-towered two-domed Romanesque cathedral, the Speyerer Dom, the burial site of Salian, Staufer and Habsburg kings and emperors. It is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Not to miss as well is the Jewish Courtyard, at the centre of the Jewish quarter, one of the oldest Jewish baths of this type in Germany, and is richly decorated with Romanesque ornamentation. During the Middle Ages, Speyer was home to one of the greatest Jewish communities in Northern Europe. Located in a wine-growing region, Speyer also is the birthplace of Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder in German). Speyer is always worth a visit, so, don’t miss the chance to discover all its highlights in a walking tour where you will learn more about this charming city.
