Riga: Behind the Iron Curtain 3.5-Hour Communism Tour

7. Riga: Behind the Iron Curtain 3.5-Hour Communism Tour

See Riga on foot and learn about the history of life behind the Iron Curtain on a 3.5-hour walking tour. You will be introduced to the Latgale region of Riga named Ķengarags, which is one of the most interesting and largest suburbs where locals do actually live and the way of life can be seen. During the tour you will feel just like you have stepped back in time, because almost nothing has changed in the looks and life of the Ķengarags suburbs. The one exception is that the Soviet military airplanes aren’t shaking the windows of the houses with the noise made from taking off at the nearby military airport of Rumbula. The architecture (living houses, schools, suburbs) of the Soviet times was very similar in the different parts of the union, with different cities sometimes having identical suburbs. By visiting Ķengarags you will get an understanding of the looks of other USSR cities.

Its decaying wooden houses stand in sharp contrast to the gloss of the Old Town or the splendour of the Art Nouveau buildings. We'll ride through the heart of Riga, where most Ridzenieki (the people of Riga) like to hang out, and on to the Great Cemetery, now a strange mix of graveyard and park, before returning to our starting point.  This is a great way to see Riga, get some exercise, help the environment and learn more about what the city is like today, and how it got this way. Brilliant insight into local food and culture and a must do if you go to Riga. Our guide, Guna, who was brilliant, explained things excellently and answered any questions and gave great tips for us. Even if you don't like the food on offer it's still worth the experience. The only small recommendation would be for the waste food on the tour to be put into paper or disposable bags instead of using plastic bags. Overall a brilliant tour.

Our guide (Buna - apologies I may have misspelled this!) was great. We ended up having a private tour with her as the other people expected to join us did not show. She was really accommodating to my fiancé’s dietary requirements and we tried an array of food and drink that we would have never tried otherwise. Definitely recommend the tour and especially Buna!

Really interesting, informative and engaging guide. He gave us an insight into Latvian life during soviet occupation, making it seem more real with family stories. It’s a chance to see something different from the normal tourist trail. Would recommend!

a very authentic food tour. You get small samples of the local food and drinks. Our guide was very nice, funny and she explained everything very well. I really recommend this tour.

Super guided tour with a good English speaking guide (Una)
