First time in Buenos Aires: Everything you need to know

A passion for life is at the heart of Buenos Aires, a city that dances to the rhythm of tango and is home to neighborhoods like San Telmo, where cobblestone streets lead you to hidden antique shops and busy markets. If it’s your first time in Buenos Aires, getting to know Argentina’s capital means venturing off the beaten path — it’s where you’ll find Buenos Aires’ hidden gems and the city’s real personality. Having a meal at a parrilla (traditional Argentine steakhouse) and visiting historic landmarks like the Recoleta Cemetery are must-dos. This first-timer’s guide will help you discover the best of Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires: Tips for first-timers

  1. Many small shops, markets, and restaurants only accept cash, so always have some pesos on hand.
  2. The local dialect is unique in several ways, including the pronunciation, so if you plan on learning a few Spanish phrases, make sure you’re learning the local way.
  3. Some small shops and businesses close for a siesta (an afternoon break), generally after lunch, between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, especially at spots outside major tourist areas.
  4. You can use contactless debit and credit cards for public transportation (buses, trains, and metro/subway), or get a reloadable SUBE card.
  5. Dinner in Buenos Aires starts late, typically after 8:00 PM, and popular parrillas fill up quickly, so consider reserving restaurants ahead.

From the punctual pickup in a luxury mini coach to the quick and professional entry, the service was top-notch. The venue itself was excellent, and our front table offered perfect views of the stage. The dinner, featuring delicious empanadas and steak, was a highlight. But the real stars were the incredibly talented dancers and singers who put on a truly spectacular and unforgettable show. The entire experience, from the food to the performance, was worth every penny, and I highly recommend it.

The architecture of the Teatro Colon is very impressive. Unique features can be found throughout the building. Our guide was able to provide very interesting facts and clear explanations about the acoustics and mechanics as well as the history of the men and women who attended the opera. It was a fantastic look back in history.

It's an inexpensive way to visit & learn about Uruguay for a day. We we're fortunate to have Nataly as our guide in Uruguay, she was fantastic. Immigration on both sides was quick & efficient. The food & service at Refugio was excellent. I enjoyed the day away so much, I'll probably return before I head back to Canada.

Pedro was full of interesting information. We learned a lot about the culture in Argentina. He was willing to stop for photo shoots anytime and he was willing to help us with our geocaching activity. He has wonderful English skills. I will recommend him to friends

Exceptional tour, very knowledge guide. I was very impressed and happy with this tour and it definitely to be recommended to visitors to Buenos Aires.
