First time in Los Angeles: Everything you need to know
First time in Los Angeles: Everything you need to know

From the star-studded sidewalks of Hollywood to the chill surf culture of Venice Beach, Los Angeles isn’t just the City of Angels. If it’s your first time in Los Angeles, some of the best activities are hiking to the Hollywood Sign, looking at the stars from Griffith Observatory, and strolling the streets of Downtown LA.

With all the things to do in Los Angeles for first-timers, there are endless ways to immerse yourself in the local culture and experience what makes this city special. This guide covers everything from LA’s must-visit neighborhoods and the best attractions to all the essential things to know about Los Angeles.

Los Angeles: Tips for first-timers

  1. Consider LA’s traffic when planning your activities. There is limited public transportation, so most people choose to drive. However, traffic can get heavy, so give yourself extra time when driving or using ride-shares, especially during rush hours (7:00-10:00 AM and 3:00 PM-7:00 PM).
  2. LA isn’t a compact city — you can’t walk from Hollywood to Santa Monica, for instance. Group attractions or activities by neighborhood to avoid excessive travel time.
  3. Time your visit right, and you can visit many of Los Angeles’ museums for free. Some museums, like LACMA and NHMLA, have free entry days each month.
  4. Tipping is standard in LA. In restaurants, bars, and even coffee shops, tipping 15-20% is standard. Some places add service charges automatically, so check your bill.
  5. Watch out for raised prices in touristy areas. Hollywood Boulevard, the Santa Monica Pier, and parts of Beverly Hills are worth visiting for a classic LA experience, but food and souvenirs are overpriced. Enjoy the sights, snap your photos, then explore less crowded spots for better deals.

The best part about Los Angeles and Southern California is that they have one of the most comfortable climates around the world pretty much the entire year.

Even in the middle of winter you may only need a light jacket.

There are no bad times to visit Los Angeles but something to be aware of is that the month of June is known as ‘June Gloom’ as the weather is very overcast and the closer you are to the coastline, you get a marine layer for the beginning half of the day which can surprise people who are expecting sunny California weather.
