From Bangkok: Holy Tattoo Experience at Wat Bang Phra

4. From Bangkok: Holy Tattoo Experience at Wat Bang Phra

Wat Bang Phra is a Buddhist monastery, approximately 50 kilometers west of Bangkok. The temple is known for its daily tattoos, or Sak Yant, given by the local monks. This tradition of tattooing dates back hundreds of years. The Gao Yord Yant or 9 Spires Yant is a sacred tattoo, believed to protect and bring good luck to the bearer. This has a similar meaning to another Sak Yant design, the Hah Taew Yant. The Gao Yord Yant is usually tattooed on the nape of the neck. The 9 Spires Yant is a geometric design and represents the 9 Sacred Peaks of Mount Meru. It contains 9 symbolic images of Buddha, demonstrating how important the number 9 is in Buddhism. This experience is truly unique in Thailand as the monks are only giving a holy tattoo and blessings to very few number of people per day. During this trip, there will be an English speaking guide who will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel in downtown Bangkok with an air-conditioned vehicle. The guide will explain to you the details of ceremony along the way and make sure that everything goes smoothly.

Fon(? Pronounced like phone) (and her assistant -sorry we forget your name!) was absolutely phenomenal on our tour. Not only was the food incredible, she provided great info and history of the food, the shops and anything we could think to ask. The food was always hot (or cold) and fresh, service was great and we never had to wait long. The pace was perfect for so much food and Fon kept us engaged and entertained the entire time. There was loads of variety in the dishes and she really tailored to our preferences (Ie our spice tolerances). We tried over 16 dishes, which were basically all you can eat. If there was something we loved and polished off, she would get us more. Do yourself a favour and skip the preceding meal- you’ll thank me later. Thanks again for such a great tour Fon & company!

Jazzy was friendly, knowledgeable and truly looked after us for 4 hours. We discovered places that we wouldn’t have known about and tried food that we may not have found without such a guide. No tasters or samples either, but full plates of food at every stop. Towards the end of the tour we visited a number of art exhibitions and galleries as we digested everything.

Annie & Otto, we’re just terrific hosts. Not only did they make us feel welcomed and cared for but they went out of their way to give us an authentic experience. Thank you so much for such a great tour of Bangkok cuisines.

Great tour with excellent food and very interesting explanations and background stories from a very nice guide Nood.

Jesse made sure we had a wide variety of street food.
