Tour del barrio marinero de Gijón

On this tour we will immerse ourselves in the history of the Asturian fishermen of Xixón and we will learn all the curiosities of one of the most notable and oldest jobs in the Asturian town. The Barriu Pesqueríes is permeated by the tireless struggle of seafarers. Our itinerary will begin at Casa Paquet (Tourist Office) and then head to the Tránsitu de Ballenes and the La Soledad chapel, headquarters of the old seafarers' guild, which would turn Xixón into an important whaling port. Inshore fishing will occupy our attention in the vicinity of the old rula (the fish market) and the dam, to also talk about the canning industry and the unloading work and street sales by women, the charismatic sardine makers. We will continue our itinerary walking through the streets of the fishing neighborhood of Cimavilla, dotted by the colorful architecture of the fishermen's houses until we reach the old Campu les Monxes (today Plaza Arturo Arias). There we will remember real people like La Tarabica, Telvina, Rambal, the cigar makers from the tobacco factory in the first women's strike and we will navigate through different life and work stories. The activity includes a visit to the interior of Jovellanos' Birthplace, whose works are related to the world of the sea and the men and women who forged the character of Barriu Altu. After an hour and a half of walking, we will conclude our visit near the Municipal Fish Market, where we will immerse ourselves in some Asturian words and expressions necessarily linked to the Cantabrian Sea.
