You will walk down the narrow alleys and streets that make up the historic heart of Schwerin. You will pass the old post office and the most beautiful castles as well as the theatre and museum. After 1.5 hours, the tour will end at the historic market place.

Surrounded by 7 lakes, Schwerin is the smallest land capital of Germany. This city has historical roots that date back to the 10th century. Schwerin has existed since at least 1018 and was recognized as a city in 1160. It is known for its romantic Schwerin Palace, known as the “Neuschwanstein of the North”, atop an island in Lake Schwerin. During the Middle Ages, the centre point of the town was Schwerin Cathedral, famous across Europe for having reputedly held a drop of Christ's blood. The city also has a largely intact old town, suffering only minor damage during World War II. In this tour, you will discover the highlights of the area Schwerin, walk its beautiful streets and learn more about its history by visiting the impressive Schwerin Castle.

Start your tour on the Schlossbrücke, the bridge leading to the Schweriner Schloss (Schwerin Castle) and its grounds. The bridge adds to the beauty of the Castle. It is a perfect place for you to take pictures with the fairytale Castle in the background. The vaulted arch bridge dates back to 1844 and spans approximately 50 meters in length. You will visit the castle known as the Schweriner Schloss, one of the most beautiful landmarks of Schwerin. Surrounded by lakes and gardens, this magnificent castle is sure to awe you. It served as a residence to the Dukes and Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg. The Castle dates back to 973 and has undergone changes with time. Walk in the gardens of the Schwerin Castle which were designed by Peter Joseph Lenné and Theodor Klett. The gardens host events such as concerts every summer while offering beautiful views of the Castle in the background. Admire the beautiful Schwerin Cathedral dating back to the 12th century. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Here, you will see the Church tower which stands 117.5 meters tall and its stained glass windows. Initially, it was built in Romanesque style, however, was later rebuilt in Gothic revival style following damage to the building due to fire.

Nestled between lakes and forest lies the 25-hectare, natural zoo in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Get to know around 1700 animals from 150 different species, the majority of which are considered endangered. These include the rare Asiatic lions, the endangered David's deer and the endangered Rothschild giraffes. As the only representatives of their species in the far north, southern white rhinos live in the 8,000 square meter rhino savannah at Schwerin Zoo. You can learn more about species conservation and gain many exciting insights into the lives of the animals on your extended discovery tour through the zoo. The Red List Center at Schwerin Zoo is unique in the world. In the building right at the entrance to the zoo, you can find out all about the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). There are numerous playgrounds and rest areas for small and large breaks as well as lots of fun in between. If you don't want to bring your own food, you are welcome to use our catering facilities or get delicious snacks in the zoo store - or in good weather at the kiosk. You are also welcome to bring your four-legged friend to the zoo! Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead.
