Siem Reap: Preah Vihear Temple Day Trip with Guide

Siem Reap: Preah Vihear Temple Day Trip with Guide

Embark on an enriching journey to Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a guided tour from Siem Reap. Learn about the temple's history, cultural relevance, and its importance to the locals. Meet your guide and driver at your hotel and head to Preah Vihear Temple, an ancient Hindu temple built during the reign of the Khmer Empire. Situated atop a 525-meter cliff in the Dongrek Mountains, the temple forms the natural border between Cambodia and Thailand. In 1962, following a lengthy dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over ownership, the International Court of Justice ruled that the temple is in Cambodia. Affording a view for many kilometers across a plain, Prasat Preah Vihear has the most spectacular setting of all the temples built during the six-centuries-long Khmer Empire. As a key edifice of the empire’s spiritual life, it was supported and modified by successive kings and so bears elements of several architectural styles. Preah Vihear is unusual among Khmer temples in being constructed along a long north-south axis, rather than having the conventional rectangular plan with orientation toward the east. On July 7, 2008, Preah Vihear was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was a long tour, from early morning to night, but it was worth it and I am very satisfied. Our guide Pip's passion for Preah Vihear was evident everywhere, and I understood why he loves it so much no matter how many times he visits. At the time we visited Koh Ker, there were very few people, so it was like we had the place to ourselves, and we were able to look around at our own pace. Pip showed us great places to take photos, and we were grateful that he took our photos many times. The driver was also very kind, and even though it was only a short distance from the restaurant to the toilet, he gave us a ride. I was tired from the intense heat, so I was glad.

Wonderful day. We were lucky to be only 2 for this excursion. Thanks to Kim, our guide, for all the very complete explanations on history and religion. Kim is very attentive, funny and took lots of pictures of us to send us by email at the end of the visit. Thanks also to our driver, Phyram, for his safe driving. It was an extraordinary experience. Very few people in these remote temples, they need to be restored but the atmosphere is magical.
