Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum & Frans Hals Exhibition Combo Ticket

4. Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum & Frans Hals Exhibition Combo Ticket

Discover the works of Frans Hals at a special exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and see firsthand why his distinctive, freewheeling style of painting became so influential. View a selection of around 50 key works from the artist's oeuvre, including paintings from the museum's own collection and a number of special loans. Paintings on loan include The Laughing Cavalier from the Wallace Collection in London – a work that normally never travels – as well as Catharina Hooft with her Nurse and Malle Babbe on loan from the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. Other pieces on loan include Family Group in a Landscape, Fruit and Vegetable Seller (on loan from a private collection), and the group portrait The Banquet of the Officers of the St George Civic Guard from 1616, which will be seen outside the city of Haarlem for the first time. Explore the retrospective exhibition, which centers on Hals' freewheeling, lively style – a style that won him praise as well as a reputation as a forerunner of impressionism. Watch him grow as an artist as you view his work. Painting by painting, see the artist begin to break with convention and gain in confidence as he finds his own inimitable way. The exhibition at the Rijksmuseum also provides insight into the times in which Hals lived and the values and traditions of the age. Leave your visit with a deeper understanding of Frans Hals, his paintings, and why he was celebrated, admired and sometimes despised for his rough-and-ready style. Your combo ticket also gives you access to the Rijksmuseum's permanent collection, which you can explore at your leisure after visiting the Frans Hals exhibition.

Haarlem: Tour inside Windmill De Adriaan + view of the city

7. Haarlem: Tour inside Windmill De Adriaan + view of the city

Molen de Adriaan is a working windmill including a museum. The museumpart shows you the development of various types of mills, such as polder mills, flour mills, oil mills and sawmills. The invention of the sawmill in 1600 made building thousands of ships possible with which the VOC traded with the whole world. Molen de Adriaan started to function in 1778 as trasmolen (cement for Roman mortar), during Napoleontic occupation in 1802 it was sold to be used as tobacco snuff mill. In 1865 it was converted in to a grainmill, with wind- and steam power. The introduction of electrical power meant the end of most Dutch windmills. In 1932 the Adriaan burnt down and it took 70 years before it was rebuilt as a working wheat mill. The Adriaan is a landmark at the river Spaarne very near the centre of Haarlem. In the milling loft below the top you can see the millstones with which wheat can be grounded into flour. The flour loft below the stone floor is where the flour is put into bags. Outside on the balcony you are close to the wings and can enjoy the beautiful view of Haarlem at 12 meters height. When a miller is in De Adriaan and with enough wind you will enjoy the turning sails. The span of the wings is 26 meters. Please be aware, that the tour is in English and Dutch. Other languages will be provided with a handout to read while being on the tour. For safety reasons, you can only go upstairs accompanied by a tour guide.

What an adventure Amsterdam, Keukenhof amd The Hague!!! Highly recommend to buy the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket. Great value for money. Hassle free trying to buy tickets at the kiosk or machine. Saved a lot of time and money using this ticket.

We went to the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, Nemo, Artis Zoo, Cat's Cabinet, Heineken Experience and the Ajax Museum. We didn't make it on time for the cruise, but that's okay. Plus free transport. We are very pleased, we recommend purchasing

The guide was very knowledgeable. Showed us the sites around Amsterdam that pertained to the German occupation. Very interesting

One of the days was the Kings day, so we only get to enjoy one day as in the other one every thing was closed.

If the ticket machines are not working, ask at the domestic ticket office
