  • From Prague: Terezin Concentration Camp Guided Tour

    2. From Prague: Terezin Concentration Camp Guided Tour

Terezin is located approximately ninety miles north of Prague and just south of Litomerice. The town was built in 1780 by Emperor Joseph II of Austria and named after his mother, Empress Maria Theresa. Terezin consisted of two fortresses. The Big Fortress was surrounded by ramparts and contained a barracks. However, Terezin had not been used as a fortress since 1882 and had become a garrison town, which was almost entirely separated from the rest of the countryside. These workers made up the Aufbaukommando (construction detail), later known in the camp as AK1 and AK2. These men were sent to transform the garrison town into a camp. These workers transformed the town, that in 1940 held approximately 7,000 residents, into a concentration camp which held about 3...

Enjoyed the walk up to the castle, lots of fun shops along the way. The castle tour is very well presented, each tour guide waits for the previous guide to move to the next room and close the door before they start their explanation of the room you are in, nice to not see guides having to talk over each other. Had excellent food on the way back down from the castle. The horse carriage is a great option to get up to the castle for those not wanting to make the hike up the hill. Driver was great getting us to and from Prague on schedule and safely.
