The wilderness starts at the Southern edge of Zurich. Hidden mountain paths are crossing small creeks and a formerly extensively managed forest before they finally reach the Uetliberg at 870 m. There splendid views over the city, the Lake of Zurich and the snow-covered Alps are waiting as a reward for the hike.
Around 150 years ago the Uetliberg was an important source of firewood and water for the fast-growing city of Zurich. Nowadays the Uetliberg is well-known amongst residents and travellers as recreation area. Most visitors restrict their stay to the viewing platform, the broad pathways and the restaurant on top of the Uetliberg.
