Discover Europe's largest opera house on an informative 90-minute tour of the Opera Garnier. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides from the Opera de Paris will uncover the secrets of this Baroque masterpiece, located in the heart of Paris.

Boasting an eclectic and ostentatious Baroque design, the Opera Garnier is one of the most extravagant representations of Second Empire architecture in France. Take this 90-minute guided tour of its public areas and you will discover flamboyant art works as you follow in the footsteps of fashionable 19th-century French society.

Inaugurated in 1875 and named after its exciting young architect, Charles Garnier, it is the largest opera house in Europe. Once you have met your guide at the museum entrance, you will be taken to the “Rotonde des Abonnes” (Members’ Rotunda), once used as the formal welcome area for opera guests. Garnier’s unique signature will be pointed out among the magnificent arabesques, before you move on to explore the building's galaxy of riches.

You will set eyes on the writhing snakes of the bronze “Pythonisse” sculpture, before climbing the double stairway of the “Grand Escalier” (Main Staircase). Imagine the swish of crinolines as you admire the breathtaking décor and stroll through vast foyers, filled with sparkling mosaics, colorful marble columns and gold-leaf flourishes. Everywhere you look will be a feast for the eyes.

Throughout the tour, expert and enthusiastic guides from the Opera de Paris point out the splendid paintings and sculptures that help to make the Opera Garnier one of the most rewarding museums in Paris, as well as one of its most impressive working theaters.

What's Included:

• English-speaking, guided tour of the Opera Garnier's public areas (including the Rotunda, Grand Escalier, Grand Foyer, Auditorium and lounges)
• Entry ticket

Good to Know:

• As a working theater, access to the Auditorium is sometimes unavailable due to technical or artistic reasons. Access cannot be guaranteed.

• The tour is not available to children below 5 years of age.

• For artistic or technical reasons, the tour itinerary can be modified on the day of the tour itself, if so instructed by the Opera Garnier, without this giving rise to a refund.

  • Rating: 5 “Fascinating!”

Reviewed by Janice from Salem, United States on October 12, 2014 We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the Opera Garnier in Paris! Our guide was a fantastic source of information. It was one of the best activities we did during our week in Paris!

  • Rating: 5 “What an excellent way to this beautiful building!”

Reviewed by Larry from Seattle, United States on October 8, 2014 Our tour guide was very theatrical and enjoyed teaching us about the building, it's history and the history of operas hels ther. This was a very memorable afternoon.

  • Rating: 3 “At least we got to see it.”

Reviewed by Theresa from Falmouth, United States on October 3, 2014 It was so hot in the opera house the day we visited that we could barely concentrate on the tour. And it did take extreme concentration to understand the heavily-accented English in which our tour guide spoke. Her frantic pace (of both speech and movement) made it even more difficult to follow. Perhaps dividing the visitors into smaller groups might help. Also, while we were extremely happy to see the lobby and the auditorium, we were sorry that we did not get any "behind the scenes" view of the process of putting an opera together---costume shop, dressing rooms, fly space. I would indeed recommend the tour to friends, but with caveats: Prepare to be bedazzled, I'd tell them, but don't really expect to learn much.

  • Rating: 5 “Highlight of our trip to Paris”

Reviewed by Ricki from Edmonton, Canada on July 27, 2014 This was my 7th visit to Paris. Although we normally "self tour" we decided to try a guided tour of the Opera. It was fabulous. The group was small enough that you could hear what was being said and ask questions. The guide was informative and knowledgable. We learnt so much we would not have learnt our own. I highly recommend this tour.

  • Rating: 4 “An amazing and informative tour!”

Reviewed by William from Lindenhurst, United States on May 24, 2014 The Opera Garnier is remarkably beautiful. During our tour we learned everything about it - the history, the architecture, the reason for the seating status, and so much more. Our guide knew everything about it and answered every question asked. She added humor throughout the tour and that made the tour even more delightful.

  • Rating: 5 “This was an excellent guided tour with a knowledgeable and enthusiasti”

Reviewed by Lin from Clifton Hill, Australia on May 14, 2014 This was really excellent. We had tickets to the opera/ballet, but booked to do this tour first and are so glad we did! It provided so much background and appreciation of the whole building that we would never have got from just going to the show (though that was amazing) or doing the self guided tour. Our guide was really enthusiastic and really brought things to life.

  • Rating: 5 “Very interesting and worthwhile view inside the Opera Garnier”

Reviewed by Ruth from Eugene, United States on May 5, 2014 We were traveling to Paris and planned to attend an opera performance at the Garnier. To get a better look at this beautiful building and learn more about it, we attended the guided tour in the afternoon. It was on time and led by a very well-spoken and knowledgeable English speaking Frenchwoman, who also had a bit of a sense of humor. It was well worth the price and the time, as we would otherwise never have seen many of the most interesting parts of the building nor understand what they were about. We highly recommend it!

  • Rating: 4 “Well worth seeing.”

Reviewed by Pamela from Mountain View, United States on April 4, 2014 This is an amazing building I enjoyed learning more about it. The group was rather large and I couldn't always get close enough to hear what our guide was saying. We were fortunate enough to be able to go into the auditorium.

  • Rating: 4 “Informative and friendly”

  • Rating: 5 “Great service and wonderful tour of the opera with a fun guide.”

Reviewed by Rita from North Shields, United Kingdom on February 22, 2014 Easy to book tickets online and no queuing. Third time we've done a tour of Opera Garnier and this was the best. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and had a sense of humour, as well as impeccable English. It is a beautiful building - fascinating history - and learning about those who were responsible for its construction; the social mores and politics of the time, brought it alive. Highly recommend this as a 'different' tourist experience.

  • Rating: 5 “Incredible building with wonderful, informative guide.”

A rehearsal was underway and therefore could not see the inside of the actual theatre.

  • Rating: 4 “Gorgeous building and enjoyable tour guide.”

Reviewed by Karin from Carp, Canada on December 6, 2013 Such a beautiful and interesting building. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and amusing. It wasn't rushed and we could step out on the balcony and wave to people on the streets of Paris!

  • Rating: 5 “A must see!”

Reviewed by Georg from Bougival, France on November 25, 2013 Very interesting tour through the building of the Opera. Our guide was very engaged, smart and nice. 1,5 went by in a rush.

  • Rating: 3 “Nice tour but a little bit basic”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Hedel, Netherlands on October 30, 2013 Certainly a nice tour through a beautiful building. The guide spoke good English and there was room for questions. It would be nice, however, to see more spaces/rooms of the Opera building, e.g.: backstage, cellars, storages, Emperor's entrance: more of the backside thingies. So: I reckon it's a good tour to have a first acquintance with the building and its history, but if you are more of an architecture-insider and already basically familiar with the building, I wouldn't recommend it.

  • Rating: 4 “Great guided tour with iinteresting history about Garnier”

  • Rating: 4 “The tour was the perfect length of time.”

Reviewed by Anabel from Downey, United States on October 21, 2013 The tour guide seemed to know everything there is to know about the opera house and was well articulated. The tour was absolutely splendid and again, it was the perfect length of time. I would highly recommend this tour to any of my friends and family who are interested in learning about Parisian architecture or are interested in The Phantom of the Opera. Smashing job!
