Overview:

Explore the oldest colleges of Oxford, including New College, founded in 1379 and a location in the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie. Go inside quads, cloisters, dining halls and chapels, and learn about Oxford's legendary tutorial system.

Description:

Join a university-educated guide, with years of experience and local knowledge of Oxford City and colleges, and explore the dreamy spires of one of the oldest univerities in the world on a 90-minute walking tour.

Go inside some the city’s most historic colleges, such as New College, founded in 1379 and more recently seen in the Harry Potter films and television productions of Inspector Morse and Lewis.

Founded in 1314, Exeter College is another favorite on most tours, while Hertford College, with its romantic façade and Bridge of Sighs, is instantly recognizable from “Brideshead Revisited.” College opening times can sometimes restrict entrance, but all tours go to the University Library to provide a greater understanding of the collegiate system unique to Oxford and Cambridge.

Discover famous alumni who studied and taught at the university, including the infamous Dr Spooner, whose portraits hang in New College Dining Hall and whose name is given to the playful linguistic phenomenon of spoonerisms.

What's Included:

• College, Library and all other admissions are included in the standard public tour; for private tours college admissions are extra/optional.

Good to Know:

• Colleges are subject to close at any time. In such cases, suitable alternative colleges will be visited instead

Reviewed by Ellen from St. Louis, United States on April 10th, 2014 Our guide was very serious. He was knowledgable and clearly explained what we were seeing & where we were going next. It was a beautiful day. One surprise was he kind if took off at the end, not waiting around for a tip. It was a goid experience overall.

  • Rating: 4 “fewer colleges and a little more about oxford would have been better”

Reviewed by Richard from Leamington spa, United Kingdom on November 18th, 2013 We enjoyed the tour- very interesting facts but after a while one quad was much like the other- a little more about the town - my wife commented that it is billed a walking tour of Oxford and university - but was more university and no oxford

  • Rating: 5 “Simply the best!!”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Swansea, United Kingdom on June 29th, 2013 Learnt so much in such a short space of time! The area around the university colleges is so beautiful and Heidi was the perfect guide, with contagious enthusiasm. My only complaint was that it was too short!! I would loved to have seen more of Oxford but this focuses mainly on the university and a couple of other nearby landmarks. Still great for a tenner!

Unfortunately we couldn't get in everywhere, but nevertheless the tour was pretty comprehensive for just 90 or so minutes.
