Overview:

Stroll downtown Nassau, stopping to taste Caribbean rums and rum-infused desserts on a 2-hour walking tour. Journey back to pirate-plundering and rum-running days, when rum and other spirits played a colorful role in Bahamian history.

Description:

Taste the strong Caribbean rums and rum-infused desserts of the Bahamas on a 2-hour rum-tasting walking tour of downtown Nassau.

This culinary tour takes you on a journey back to pirate-plundering and rum-running days when rum and other spirits played a rich and colorful role in Bahamian history. Starting at Pirate’s Pub, next to the Pirates of Nassau Museum, enjoy a swig of the demon water, and delve into a time when inebriated pirates roamed these very streets.

After sampling some rum-infused delicacies at Hillside House, and boozy hand-crafted chocolates at Graycliff Chocolatier, wash it all down with rum samples and a cocktail at John Watling’s Distillery. Hear profiteering tales of old, when these historic properties stored liquor for ocean transport across illicit passages of the Gulf Stream from Nassau’s harbor.

Strap on your buccaneering boots for a jolly good time, and grab your satchel - you’ll want to carry some of this elixir home!

  • Rating: 5 “Very fun, highly recommended”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Maricopa, United States on September 11, 2014 We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. You learn the history of the island and try some fantastic rums and treats. Do make sure that you eat before though because it winds up being more drinking than just a couple samples. the cocktails and desserts included were great too. Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun.

Reviewed by Cary from Colorado Springs, United States on June 27, 2014 A short but very fun tour that will give you some history of the rum trade in the Bahamas as well as some great samples! The John Waitling Distillery tour and tasting is especially great. And our guide was very friendly, humorous, and fun. Definitely worth doing!

  • Rating: 4 “Great tour, great guide, great experience”

Reviewed by Markus from London, United Kingdom on February 27, 2014 Booked this tour as part of our cruise. Was really fun and something different, compared to all the normal tours offered by the cruise ship. Our guide was really friendly and explained us a lot about the history of the Bahamas. We had several rums, cocktails, rum chocolate as well as a rum cake. The walk felt short and ended by the famous John Watling's Distillery where we had our last cocktail. I can definitely recommend this tour.

  • Rating: 5 “Excellent tour, guide very knowledgeable”

  • Rating: 5 “The Rum tasting tour was a fascinating historic walk thru time.”

Reviewed by Pat from Tuscaloosa, United States on February 2, 2014 We enjoyed the different rums from a clear one to an amber to a spiced rum my favorite. Starting out with a lower quality at the Pirate's Tavern then we tasted rum cake at an art gallery. Then we walked to my favorite place which is a Bed & Breakfast built by Pirates 300 yrs. ago and later owned by Al Capone's rum running mistress from the gangster times. It was beautiful with cobalt blue tiled pools, along with a cigar factory and chocolate factory on the premises. Our final destination was the new rum distillery owned by the Bacardi brothers. Very interesting experience and well worth our time especially from 2 former teacher's perspective . Our guide was very personal and informative.

  • Rating: 4 “A fun way to see a bit of Nassau.”

Reviewed by Jessie from Raleigh, United States on January 30, 2014 There was a bit of confusion at the start. We waited out front of the Pirates Pub as per instructions and no one showed up. We went into the pub to ask and all was well. Our guide, Orchid, was inside waiting for us. She gave us historical background of pirates as we tasted 3 styles of rum and drank a rum punch. We walked to an art gallery to hear more history -- prohibition era and tasted delicious homemade rum cake. Toured an art gallery and visited a hotel with a chocolate factory and tasted wonderful chocolates. Ended at the distillery with more rum tastings and their signature rum drink. Orchid was a great guide -- hosts were friendly at all stops. And we got off the beaten path to see more of Nassau than if we had walked around ourselves. A great 2-hour tour! Only rated 4 stars because of the confusion at the beginning.

  • Rating: 4 “Overall it was a good time and highly educational.”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Annapolis, United States on December 7, 2013 We really enjoyed this tour and felt that we got to experience much more than we thought we would. In addition to the rum tastings, we learned a lot about pirate history and the history of rum. We also really enjoyed the distillery and Graycliff. Our guide was great and was very knowledgable and enthusiastic.

The only small hiccup is that There seemed to be some disconnect between Get Your Guide and Islandz Tours, resulting in a somewhat embarrassing situation where we had to prove that we had already paid for the tour. I would not discourage people from booking a tour, but just be conscious of it.
