Towering over rocky crags at the foot of the German Alps, Neuschwanstein Castle has inspired awe and wonder ever since it opened to the public in 1886. This full-day tour is a fairytale adventure that is not to be missed. Departing from Munich, take a 2-hour train journey through the majestic Bavarian countryside to the idyllic setting of Neuschwanstein.

On arrival, enjoy the splendor of the village of Hohenschwangau, and continue to Neuschwanstein's neighboring castle. Hear about the famous legend of Lohengrin as you look over the Alpsee.

A short climb up to the Marienbrücke reveals picture-perfect views of the 19th-Century, neo-romantic masterpiece, as well as the gorge beneath. From the courtyard, listen as your guide tells the story of the budget-busting, problematic construction of Neuschwanstein Castle. Whether you choose to take the 45-minute tour inside the castle (at an extra cost of EUR 12), or decide to invest the time and money in one of the quintessentially Bavarian beer gardens, while the guide describes the lavish castle interior, the tour will leave you wanting for nothing in the epic story of Neuschwanstein Castle and “Mad King Ludwig II.”

Hear about the life and passions of Ludwig and discover the story behind his mysterious death. You will also enjoy stunning views of the Bavarian countryside and Alps, the Marienbrücke Bridge, the Swan King, Hohenschwangau Castle, Pöllath Waterfall and Gorge, and much more. If the weather is particularly good, there will also be the chance to take a dip in the Alpsee lake, so bring your swimming things.

What's Included:

• Transportation by train

What's Not Included:

• Entrance to the castle (EUR 9)
• In order to indulge in the finest views of Newschwanstein, you must climb the castle hill
• A bus or carriage ride up the hill is available for EUR 2.60 and EUR 6 respectively

Good to Know:

• Remember to bring decent footwear for the uphill walks

  • Rating: 5 “great day!”

Reviewed by Carolina from Madrid, Spain on March 5th, 2013 We had a wondeful day with the small group of people and the super nice guide Michelle. She told us a lot of stories about the castles and royal family. Though it was a foggy day we enjoyed

  • Rating: 4 “Interesting day out”

Reviewed by Paul from HITCHIN, United Kingdom on February 10th, 2013 A day long tour meeting at 9.00 and getting back around 18.00. We met our guide for the day (Jon) at 09.00 outside Starbucks in Munich's main station. At 09.50 we set off on a two hour train journey and then connected with a bus for a 10 minute ride to Neuschwanstein. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, he was from Devon originally. We were a small group, just 8 of us and Jon made sure we all got the most out of the day with humour and facts about the castle and history. The castle is set high up on the hill with fantastic views all around. You can walk up the hill to it or catch a horse drawn cart for 6EU one way, worth it if you're worried about the steep walk up as you will still need to walk the very last bit and then take the interior tour (35mins) It's a short tour as there isn't much to see inside as the castle was never finished, but what you do see is quite spectacular. There is plenty of time to see it all and then it's time to start back to Munich.

  • Rating: 5 “Great, full access tour with train ride both ways”

Reviewed by Suzanne from Washington, United States on August 28th, 2012 My family really enjoyed the tour. Our children are 12 and 14 and said that this tour was their favorite part of visiting Munich. Diana was our guide and she was very helpful, personable and connected with each attendee personally. Her tour was very well-paced and she allowed us time for food and bathroom trips. She did not spend time on souvenir stops, instead spent time sharing stories and showing us some great sights. She was very knowledgeable of the history of the castle and it's owner. She also took us to the bridge, waterfall and down the gorge which was a highlight of the visit. Other tours did not include this type of visit which is really a shortcoming of their tour.
Note that the walk up to the castle is more like a "hike." You must be in decent health and shape to make the 45 minute trip up the incline. The train ride was 2 hours each way without a/c (but with open windows open) so be aware if going in the heat of the summer. And bring snacks if you have kids.

  • Rating: 4 “Beautiful places and very friendly guide with excellent English!”

Reviewed by Alexander from Berin, Germany on July 7th, 2012 Our guide (Marcin) is very friendly and has excellent English (his speech is easy for understanding). Sometimes guides tell only that things, that are obligatory, but it is not about Marcin! He tried to fill our time with information and good impression and we saw, that he is very sincere! He went with us to castle and repeat speech after castle's guide, because he (castle's guide) had not good understandable English. Beautiful views and comfortable trip!

  • Rating: 5 “Amusing tour of Bavaria’s history.”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from 85748, Germany on February 3rd, 2012 The tour to and through Neuschwanstein was brilliant! The time plan was just right, you've got enough time to cater for yourself but not too much to dawdle. The best thing about the tour was the guide! Marcin explained the history of Bavaria, the monarchy and of course the palaces of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in a very descriptive and amusing way. It made history fun! He told the history so vividly and enthusiastically that a lot stayed in our heads, which made the palace visit even more interesting. Especially the many details in the palace stayed with us. I'd recommend the tour to anyone, it was a really great day!

  • Rating: 5 “Wonderful experience”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Willowbrook, United States on November 13th, 2011 The tour guide was wonderful and very informative. it was great to have all the transportation etc taken care of. It saved a lot of worry and stress on our part since we aren't familiar with the area and do not speak German.

  • Rating: 4 “A long tour but worth it!”

Reviewed by Lauren from Hawthorn East, Australia on October 10th, 2011 This all day tour is a great way to see Neuschwanstein. The castle isn’t that close to Munich so the easiest way to get there is by joining a tour. They know the timetables down to a T so it is easy to catch the connecting services.

The Castle tour itself isn’t included but it’s worth looking inside the castle. Only a few rooms were completed but you can see where Ludwig was headed.

This tour guide provides all the necessary background information and these provide nice little information breaks during the hike up and down the hill.

The walk down by the gorge is very beautiful. Although if you are scared of heights it can be a bit challenging. Although the views from Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) make it worth the vertigo!

  • Rating: 4 “A great day that balances hiking and history.”

Reviewed by Monica from Vermilion, Canada on July 20th, 2011 While the day was a little long thanks to the train ride, our guide was a blast. It was really nice to have all of the transportation taken care of, especially the private busses between Fussen and Hohenschwangau. It was great to have some options, like being able to climb at your own pace and take the gorge trail down. It was a good balance of guidance and freedom, we definitely didn't feel like we were on a school field trip which is the way with some tours.

  • Rating: 5 “Best experience in Germany”

Reviewed by Nick from Seattle, United States on June 7th, 2011 Our tour guide was Chris. It was his last tour as his work visa was expiring. The experience was great, much better than I expected. Chris was very knowledgeable, fun, and allowed us to take our own pace where needed. He offered insight into the castle that was not brought up in the official castle tour. We were able to get some jaw dropping photos of the castle and had an amazing experience overall. Chris was truly a rockstar here.

  • Rating: 4 “full story telling guide was excellent”

Reviewed by Alex from Seoul, South Korea on June 7th, 2011 It was second time to visit Neuschwanstein castle. At first, I visited alone and enjoyed outlook and simple castle quide. Then, impressive thing in this time, our tour guide introduced background with full story of the castle and the King at the tour point until the final trip back. I would like to visit another place if I have a chance to go. Thank you~!

  • Rating: 1 “Worst Tour I've Ever Been On”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Cresco, United States on June 6th, 2011 This was the worst tour I've ever been on. The guide was late, our bus ended up being late (not the tour guides fault) BUT the tour guide told us he would give us information about the Castle on the way, we received no information. Once we arrived the tour guide disappeared as we hiked up to the castle. The guide said he would follow us through the tour and supplement the castle tour, he wasn't able to get in because he didn't have enough tickets for everyone and encouraged someone to 'jump the ticket stand', for which he was taken to the security office. Once we completed the tour, we were not told what time the bus would arrive so the majority of the group weren't out on time. Because if this, I had to purchase a bus ticket (which was part of the tour price) and on the way home, again received no information.

  • Rating: 5 “The engaging and informative tour guide made it perfect!!”

Reviewed by Preta from Novi, United States on March 27th, 2011 This a tour I would strongly recommend. Our tour guide (Carl) was very engaging despite knowing he has likely done this tour many many times he made it feel like it was his first time taking us the Castle. His strong knowledge of historical facts coupled with great story telling challenged the imagination and made the trip quite an adventure. He made the build up of making to the Castle worth every bit of the trip! Thank you for such a great experience!
