Overview:

Get up close and personal with Spain and its rich history on a day tour to Avila and Segovia. Relax as you are taken to visit the birthplace of Santa Teresa de Jesus in Avila. Then see the Aqueduct of Segovia and stop off at the stunning castle, Alcázar.

Description:

Discover the history of Spain on a full-day excursion leaving from Madrid. Visit Avila and Segovia, learning about the rich cultural heritage of the country and its people.

Begin with transport via an air-conditioned bus to Avila, where you will learn about Santa Teresa de Jesus, a great mystic woman of the Roman Catholic Church. You will also see some of the city; Avila has the most ancient and completely fortified complex in Spain.

Its 8,200-foot-long wall (about 2,500 meters) and its 90 fortified towers surround the old city, which houses a great part of its monumental treasures, including a large number of Romanesque-style churches, gothic palaces, and a fortified cathedral of the 12th century.

Next, continue on to visit the remains of the Roman Empire as seen at the Aqueduct of Segovia. Discover how this residence of some of the kings of Castilia is one of the most important medieval groups of buildings in Spain.

Finally, admire the "Lady of the Cathedrals" and view the most spectacular castle in Spain, Alcázar, which was built as a fortress but has also been used as a royal palace, state prison, college, and military academy.

  • Rating: 4 “Great city, quick tour”

Reviewed by Gareth – Melbourne, Australia on February 11, 2015 Most of the time is spent in transit due to the distance to the city, however the city itself is very impressive.

Due to the escalators there is not too much uphill walking so it's an easy walk through the city. The city itself is very interesting and definitely worth a visit, possibly a full day visit if you have the time.

  • Rating: 5 “Great day in two cities with excellent explanations”

Reviewed by Melissa – Nashville, United States on January 5, 2015 On our last day in Madrid, we wanted to get out of the city and explore without the hassle of getting ourselves there by train or car. This affordable tour allowed us the opportunity to visit two cities with excellent English explanations. Very enjoyable!
