Overview:

Spend a day at Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum. Pass the gate with the deceitful inscription, "Arbeit Macht Frei" - "Work Makes You Free," just as the prisoners did between 1940-1945. Learn the history from informative exhibits and documentation.

Description:

The name "Auschwitz" is synonymous with atrocity and secrets clouded by mist. In this somber and eerie place we confront our history and reckon with some of the most difficult lessons of our time. Despite its darkness, Auschwitz is a place that simply must be visited and our day together will give you insight into the way this camp was run, the world of those who lived and died here, and why it is that we must never forget this period of history.

The museum areas of Auschwitz-Birkenau include approximately 150 building and 300 ruins. You will see the roads, fences, watchtowers and rail ramps coupled with interesting and informative exhibits and documentation.

Auschwitz is a place that continually reminds us of man's fragility while underscoring the gift of human life. On this day trip from Krakow, we will show you this legendary site and learn together about the main stage for one of the darkest epochs in human history.

  • Rating: 4 “A memory for life”

Reviewed by Lars from Skanderborg, Denmark on April 7, 2014 The tour was very good, but it is definately not for sensitive people. What is told and shown is terrifying. You get to see everything in these historic places which laid ground to horrible actions of mankind. Bus was comfortable and the guides were very good. However, there is no chance of lunch anywhere so make sure you have eaten well before going. A crowded snack bar can be found but no decent meals.

  • Rating: 3 “Little new information provided by tour, but being there was powerful.”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Knoxville, United States on August 2, 2013 The tour is technically in English but what this means is a Polish speaking guide whose words were translated into English by another Polish speaking guide whose English was average. On the plus side, hotel pick-up was good; van used for hotel pick-up was new, comfortable and air conditioned. If you know a lot about the Holocaust already, this tour would be fine for you. The guides were somewhat repetitive in the information they provided--a lot of which was covered in the video you watch on the van on the way to the site. Overall the visit to Auschwitz/Birkenau was very powerful and moving and the transportation and organization of the tour was excellent, it's just that I didn't learn much I didn't already know.

  • Rating: 4 “Informative and insightful trip professionally presented”

Reviewed by Joshua from Berlin, Germany on March 25, 2012 The good:
    - very professional guide
    - clear presentation of history with no 'fluffing up' the information that every human being should hear about the destructive potential of humans
    - tour guide fills in gaps of information with what signs and information sheets don't contain
    - good introduction dvd video on bus
    - pick up from your accommodation in Krakow

    The bad:
    - bumpy bus trip approx 1 hr to get there
    - not enought time given for proper lunch break, if you felt like eating that is

  • Rating: 5 “Punctual, respectful and informative”

Reviewed by Taani from Berlin, Germany on March 25, 2012 The pickup from the hostel came exactly when scheduled, at 10:35 on the dot! The bus to Auschwitz took around an hour and we were shown a video featuring original footage from a Soviet cameraman from the days of the liberation. The video was very enlightening, well worth viewing in itself. The tour guide presented the stories of Auschwitz in a very respectful yet serious manner and was completely professional in his conduct. We were then taken to Birkenau where we saw the living conditions of the prisoners and other remaining structures. All in all, a tour to Auschwitz is emotionally draining but Discover Cracow gave us a very smooth experience with the added bonus of stories from the tour guide about individual prisoners and survivors. The tour was also very beneficial in explaining some of the photographs and placing them in context for us. The only downside to this tour is that we were not able to explore all the exhibitions in Auschwitz, due to time limitations.
