Explore the temples of Kolkata on this 8-hour tour, with a pick-up from your hotel at 09:00. You will visit the Calcutta Jain Temple, the Dakshineshwar Temple of the goddess Kali, Kalighat Kali Temple on the banks of the River Hooghly, and the majestic white marble Birla Temple.

Dakshineshwar Temple is located 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of Kolkata city and was established in 1847 by Rani Rasmoni. One of the largest temples in Kolkata, it is encircled by 12 other temples dedicated to Lord Siva.

Explore the main temple, known as Navaratna Temple, decorated in conventional Nava-ratna style. The Kali puja is celebrated in the month of October when the temple complex is thronged by hundreds of devotees who gather to pay their homage to the idol.

The fame of the Dakshineshwar Temple is inherently associated with Ramakrishna Paramhansa, who is said to have achieved spiritual vision here.

Discover the legend of how the temple came into existence when Rani Rashmoni saw a dream as she was about to start on her pilgrimage to Benaras, when the goddess Kali appeared before her and instructed her to construct a temple on the banks of the Ganges.

Continue to Calcutta Jain Temple, also known as Pareshnath Jain Temple. Built by the art connoisseur, Ray Badridas Bahadur, it is a mind-blowing place of worship, enhanced by beautiful mirrors and colored stones.

See the 4 different temples of Shitalnath Ji, Chandraprabhu Ji, Mahavir Swami, and Dada Ji Jain Temple. The main temple was established to honor the 10th Jain Avtaar, Sri Sital Nath Ji. There is a small stream, covered by gorgeous flowers on all sides, presenting dazzling palettes of colorful mosaics, spires, columns, and slivered figurines that resemble the work of Gaudi.

Directly south, the quieter Sri Channa Probhuji Mandir has a fine gateway arch and plenty of greenery, while the sedate 1810 Dadaji Jain Mandir has a central marble tomb-temple patterned with silver studs.

Pareshnath Jain Temple contains a cozy greeting room and a museum. It is a splendid edifice that consists of mirror inlaid pillars, and windows of stained glass. Floral designs further adorn the marble flooring. It also has a garden that contains a blocks of glass mosaics, and awesome European statues.

Break for lunch, or return to your hotel for a rest. Continue in the afternoon with a visit to Kalighat Temple, and Birla Temple.

Located on the banks of the River Hooghly, Kalighat Kali Temple is dedicated to the goddess Kali, who is believed to be the destroyer as well as liberator.

It is regarded as one of the 52 Shakti Peethas of India. There is an interesting legend behind the formation of the temple, which suggests that when Lord Shiva was furiously performing his Rudra Tandava dance, various parts of the corpse of the goddess Kali fell off at different points, where pilgrimages were later built. The Kalighat Kali Temple is said to have sprung up at the place where a toe of her right foot fell.

End this amazing temple tour at Birla Temple, a majestic white marble temple that towers to a height of 160 feet. Situated at the busy junction of Ashutosh Choudhury Avenue, it was built by the industrialist Birla family. Designed on the lines of the famous Lingaraj Temple of Bhubaneswar, it took 26 years to complete from its inception in 1970.

See statues of the deities Krishna and Radha in the main temples. The left side temple shikhar (dome) houses the goddess Durga, the Hindu goddess of Shakti. The right side dome of the temple houses Shiva in meditation.

Birla Mandir also showcases pictorial depictions of scriptures of the Bhagavad Gita in its stone engravings, and some intricate Rajasthani temple architecture by the architect Nomi Bose.
