The word Sunwapta is a Stoney Indian word meaning turbulent waters. Our trip on the river lives up to the name. The Sunwapta is a narrow, steep, glacial feed river in the heart of Jasper National Park and is rated as an overall Grade 3.
The Sunwapta is the only grade 3 whitewater offered in Jasper National Park. The river is glacial fed and as long as the weather is warm we can have great water up until closing.
The river trip itself begins with a float where crews can practice their paddling technique before the show begins. Once the rapids start they just build and build until the Whopper soaks everyone just before the take out. Once the rapids start it is still important to look at the 360 degree Mountain Views. The river follows the jagged ridge of the Endless Chain. All trips are in 8 person-guided rafts.

“Great fun for novices, less so for experts”
Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Fort Collins, United States on September 2nd, 2013 I've got a fair bit of rafting experience, so to be fully honest, Grade 3 waters hold little excitement for me. That said, my girlfriend, a novice, had an absolute blast and then was like, "That was some adrenaline rush, huh!?" Hahahaha, to each their own. If you're a novice, then it's def a lot of fun. If you've got more experience, you'll prob want to check for a higher grade.
Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Vancouver, Canada on July 22nd, 2013 Really great fun in the company of competant and friendly coaches. Would have been a 5/5 if we hadn't had to spend so long on the bus ride (40 mins!). Still, overall, it was worth the wait.
“Perfect first rafting experience”
Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Toronto, Canada on July 9th, 2013 I must admit: I was a bit nervous before my first rafting experience. However, the crew were not only great, fitting us with all sorts of protective gear and giving very clear/easy instructions, but (thankfully!) the water also wasn't that rough, so it was actually a perfect first experience. Can't wait to take it up a level next time around!
