Kick-off this Houston tour from Bistro Lancaster. Learn about the epic Downtown Houston Tunnel System, and then walk over to Chase Tower, Texas’s tallest building. Pause for a photo in front of Joan Miro’s brightly colored Personage and Birds sculpture, then go inside and ride the elevator up to the 60th-floor. Take in the sweeping views and appreciate the city’s famous skyline.

Afterwards explore the city from below as you descend 6 meters into one of the tunnel system’s 10 colorful food courts. Walk through the air-conditioned tunnel to the 1929 Chase Building, and take an elevator up to its Art Deco banking hall.

Pause for a well-deserved Dutch-style lunch in one of the food courts, and appreciate the hum of Houston as the work force passes by. There is time here to explore an underground gift shop, before heading back up to street level.

Walk through Hermann Square Park into Houston’s City Hall and Visitors Center. Get-to-grips with Houston’s history with an informative film screening, and check out some of the center’s fascinating exhibits.

As the tour draws to a close head into the Theater District Garage, before re-entering the tunnel to walk to 2 of Philip Johnson’s architectural masterpieces–the 1976 Modern Pennzoil Place and 1983 Post-Modern Bank of America Center.

  • Rating: 5 “Architecture tour”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from New York, United States on April 1st, 2013 I just did the Heart of the Tunnel tour in Houston having been a little bit apprehensive as to whether this is what I wanted or not. I was worried it might turn into more of an escorted shopping trip but this IS first and foremost an architecture tour. Houston isn't one of the USA's most recognisable skylines for a reason, but its biggest secret is its interiors. When you step inside some of these buildings that is when you realize just how incredible some of them are. I'd recommend this to any architecture nut. Brilliant tour.
