Overview:

Join paranormal authors Geordie Buxton and Ed Macy on this unique tour. Get thoroughly spooked as we tell of a series of mysterious hauntings – from orphan poltergeists to a lost cadet inside the old citadel to an angelic reverend, and many more!

Description:

"There is only one essential ingredient in a ghost story: death." So say Charlestonians Ed Macy and Geordie Buxton in their introduction to their book about the haunted streets of Charleston.

By rambling through the oft-forgotten enclaves of the Holy City, the paranormal authors bring guests face to face with a group of orphans who haunt a dorm of a Charleston College, a Citadel cadet who haunts a local hotel, and an angelic spirit in a Scottish Presbyterian graveyard, to name just a few.

We will hear tales of a bookstore phantom, notorious for rearranging books in perfect vertical stacks, and a gruesome 19th century amputation taking place in a medical student’s apartment. This tour is not for the faint-hearted!

Based on historical events and specific details that are often lost in our general notion of ghosts, each haunting encounter will send chills down your spine.

  • Rating: 4 “Great guide, interesting tour”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Davidson, United States on June 25th, 2014 We booked this tour not knowing it would go through our hotel, the Embassy Suites, the original Citadel building, the most haunted hotel in Charleston. It was very interesting and well thought out and almost acted out by Geordie, our guide. When we returned to the hotel, we were hot and tired. After settling in, my kids were watching TV, playing videos, and generally being quiet. All of a sudden, I heard what sounded like a landslide, and watched the huge mirror over the bar in our suite slip from the wall and flip over onto the floor!! Fortunately, no one was hurt, but we were all shaken up, especially after the ghost stories Geordie told!

  • Rating: 5 “Excellent tour, highly recommended!”

Reviewed by Wendy from Warner Robins, United States on June 22nd, 2014 Gordie was an awesome guide. He knew tons of history leading to the reason there are ghosts there. He answered a ton of questions and was very personable! The tour was longer than most for time at 90 minutes, but the distance and pace were not bad at all, plus there was a bathroom stop.

  • Rating: 5 “Great ghost tour!”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Atlanta, United States on June 7th, 2014 Very interesting and informative ghost tour. Host was friendly and funny, and really knew his stuff. Had some great stories to share as well! I recommend.

  • Rating: 5 “One of the highlights of our first trip to Charleston”

Reviewed by Angela from Morehead City, United States on June 4th, 2014 Our first night in Charleston in the spring was already great but this tour was a real highlight. My husband wanted to hear more of the history of the town, and I enjoy something a little scarier so this sounded like a perfect mix of the two. We looked at a lot of tours online before we left, but we loved that this tour was given by someone born & raised in Charleston and had written multiple published works on the haunted history in the area. Our guide did not disappoint, he took us to a nice mix of interesting locations with real historic relevance and some that were a little more off the beaten path. The stories were believable, inspiring, amusing and truly creepy at times but definitely something that would be appropriate for a variety of age groups. It probably varies depending on the time of year, but our group was 8-10 people on a Sunday night in June, which was just right. We'll definitely be back in the future for one of the other tours next time we're in town.

Geordie held our interest for the entire tour. He was an excellent storyteller and the pace of the tour was great. I would recommend this as a "must do" in Charleston.

  • Rating: 5 “Fantastic”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Mt Pleasant, United States on April 29th, 2014 Terrific, very knowledgeable guide who was able to provide a great historical depiction of what went on in Charleston several hundred years ago to the present. While it was not really about "ghosts" the guide was very engaging with respect to historical events. I would urge travelers to make this tour part of their visit.

  • Rating: 5 “Fantastic ghost tour supported by facts and history!”

Reviewed by Jason from Florence, United States on February 25th, 2014 Geordie Buxton was our walking guide. He has that "likeable" factor and really good story teller. He kept the whole group engaged which I was initially worried about since there was about a dozen and only one guide. He knows his facts and a published author, so I took notes on the items which really peaked my interest. The fun continued after I got home by reading more of the things Geordie shared during the tour. Loved this tour and left wanting more. Thanks for making our trip to Charleston more memorable.

  • Rating: 5 “Tons of historical info- interesting and creepy too!”

Reviewed by Janeen from New York, United States on January 21st, 2014 Our guide was great and had lots of great info about the history of Charleston. He told a great ghost story!the part of town wasn't as preserved historically as some others, but he made the area come back to life with his tour! Highly recommended.

  • Rating: 5 “Engaging”

Reviewed by Evelyn from Tallahassee, United States on January 2nd, 2014 My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the haunted walking tour. The guide was very knowledgeable about Charleston history and was able to add in the "ghostly" pieces that made the tour even more entertaining. What was really nice was the tour was in a section of Charleston that we had not visited before so we were able to see even more of the beautiful city.

  • Rating: 3 “Enjoyed the tour but expected more actual ghost stories.”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Harleyville, United States on November 1st, 2013 Did not appreciate today's politics brought into the history of yesterday. Guide was friendly, entertaining but a lot of the facts were not true.

  • Rating: 5 “Factual, Entertaining, Spooky!”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Wilmington, United States on October 15th, 2013 A great walk in the heart of Charleston... at night... discussing death, ghosts, and all things creepy. It was a good time! Smart, educated guide who is dedicated to his craft and factually based Charleston horrors. This walk doesn't turn Charleston into a haunted house for the duration of the tour, returning afterwards to the beautiful, southern city that it is. It reveals the darkest moments in the cities history, actual accounts of death, haunts, and scientifically proven events. You will leave this tour with a greater appreciation for this southern city's gory and troubled past; and you will think twice about where you spend the night in the Holy City.
***Only issue: Get Your Guide has this listed as starting at 8:30pm, but it actually starts at 9:00pm. Call ahead to confirm the start time.

  • Rating: 5 “Great ghost tour!”

Reviewed by Trudy from Mount Gilead, United States on August 12th, 2013 Geordie gave a very detailed and interesting ghost tour. It is obvious that he knows his history and is a great storyteller. I would recommend this tour to friends visiting Charleston. Thanks!

  • Rating: 4 “Interesting and different”

Reviewed by a GetYourGuide Customer from Knoxville, United States on August 8th, 2013 This ghost tour takes you to a very different part of Charleston than the usual tour. The old Citadel, The College of Charleston and the site of the orphan asylum to name a few. Lots of interesting historical facts with a few ghost stories too. A local medium was along for our tour as an added bonus which made it very different. The biggest drawback was the size of the group. Ghost stories lose their intimacy with such a large group.
